Legitimacy Upside-Down: From Beliefs to Political Normativity
Wann: Mi, 29.04.2026, 09:30 Uhr bis 17:00 Uhr
Wo: Warburg-Haus, Heilwigstraße 116, 20249 Hamburg
You are warmly invited to an international workshop on the manuscript Legitimacy Upside-Down: From Beliefs to Political Normativity by Ilaria Cozzaglio, Junior Professor of Philosophy of Social Sciences at the Department of Philosophy.
The manuscript develops a normative theory of political legitimacy that foregrounds the role of citizens’ beliefs, perspectives, and values in shaping standards of political authority. It shows how political judgments can be formulated by combining philosophical reasoning and laypeople’s experience of authority, without reducing a theory of legitimacy to a mere account of the de facto acceptance of power.
The workshop will feature contributions from invited discussants:
- Greta Favara (Milan)
- Johannes Gerschewski (Berlin)
- Peter Niesen (Hamburg)
- David Owen (Southampton)
- Janosch Prinz (Maastricht)
- Christine Straehle (Hamburg)
The event will take place on April 29, from 9:30 to 17:00, at Warburg-Haus.
Please register by April 19 at emmi-inari.lampinen@uni-hamburg.de
