DIS/ABLING CITIES: GRONINGEN – HAMBURGEin internationales Projektseminar zum Thema urbaner Inklusion und Zugänglichkeit

Im Sommersemester 2025 widmet sich ein gemeinsames Projektseminar der Universität Hamburg (UHH) und des University College Groningen (UCG) dem Thema Inklusion und Zugänglichkeit im urbanen Raum. Ziel war es, städtische Umgebungen in Hamburg und Groningen auf Fragen der Exklusion und normativen Raumgestaltung sowie Teilhabe hin zu untersuchen.

Im Zentrum des Seminars stand die Arbeit in internationalen Projektgruppen, die aus Studierenden beider Universitäten gebildet wurden. Den Auftakt bildete ein viertägiger Workshop in Groningen (28.– 31. März), in dem thematische und methodische Grundlagen erarbeitet sowie erste Projektideen entwickelt wurden. Die Projektarbeit erfolgte anschließend im Verlauf des Semesters sowohl vor Ort in Hamburg und Groningen als auch digital in transnationaler Zusammenarbeit.

Zum Einsatz kamen Methoden der Urban Studies wie Deep Mapping, künstlerisch-forschende Zugänge, visuelle und partizipative Verfahren sowie praxisorientierte Erkundungen im Stadtraum. Inhaltlich standen Themen wie Partizipation, Inklusion und Exklusion, Behinderung und Beeinträchtigung sowie Wohlbefinden und Utopie im urbanen Kontext im Fokus. Die Projektgruppen arbeiteten mit verschiedenen gesellschaftlichen und institutionellen Partnern zusammen – in Hamburg etwa mit dem Institut für Gebärdensprache, der HafenCity Universität und der Stadt Hamburg. In Groningen fand die Kooperation u. a. mit dem laufenden Projekt This Abled City statt. Die im Laufe des Semesters entwickelten Gruppenarbeiten werden im Rahmen einer öffentlichen Abschlusspräsentation am 20. Juni 2025 am Institut für Liberal Arts & Sciences an der Universität Hamburg vorgestellt. Bereits am 17. Juni nehmen die UHH-Studierenden virtuell am Project Presentation Day des University College Groningen teil.

In the summer term 2025, students from Universität Hamburg (UHH) and University College Groningen (UCG) collaborated in the interdisciplinary project seminar Dis/abling Cities, which focused on issues of inclusion and accessibility in urban spaces. The seminar encouraged a critical examination of how cities enable or disable participation through their spatial, social, and normative structures.

International student groups formed during an intensive four-day workshop in Groningen (March 28 – 31), where they laid the thematic and methodological foundations of their projects and developed initial ideas. Over the course of the semester, the groups continued their work both locally in Hamburg and Groningen and digitally in collaboration with their project groups.

The seminar drew on methods from urban studies, including deep mapping, artistic research, participatory and visual methodologies, as well as hands-on explorations of urban environments. Key themes included inclusion and exclusion, disability and impairment, participation, and well-being and utopia in urban contexts. The project groups collaborated with various societal and institutional partners — in Hamburg, for example, with the Institute for Sign Language, HafenCity University, and the City of Hamburg. In Groningen, cooperation included, among others, the ongoing project This Abled City. The final presentations of the student group projects will take place on June 20, 2025 at the Institute for Liberal Arts & Sciences at Universität Hamburg. Prior to that, the groups present their work during UCG’s Project Presentation Day on June 17, where UHH students participated online.

The joint project seminar (led by Prof. Dr. Sophie Witt, Prof. Dr. Bettina van Hoven and Dr. Franziska Kutzick) marks the beginning of a collaboration between the two Liberal Arts & Sciences programs and is expected to continue in the next summer semester.
