Guide to Search Functions and Filters
1. Filters
Filter Categories – List View
You can apply filters in the following categories to narrow down the displayed results:
- Edition List – Alphabetical List of all Editions from which the Greek and/or Latin texts are quoted. Additional details about editions and literature are given in the Bibliography field.
- Region – Historical region in Asia Minor.
- Place – Polis/city to which the inscription is assigned (usually based on ancient findspot or original location).
- Inscription Type – Type of inscription from a predefined list.
- Object Type – Type of object from a predefined list.
- Epoch – Period assigned according to dating information.
- Century – Century assigned according to dating information.
- Material – Material of the object bearing the inscription.
Filter Categories – Map View
You can filter the displayed results using the following location-based map filters:
- Findspot Map – Filters results by the modern findspot of the inscription.
- Place Map – (Function not fully defined in current version).
2. Selecting Visible Columns
A total of 19 descriptive fields are available for inscriptions. Using the Select Visible Columns filter, you can show or hide columns to customize the results display to your needs.
Definition of the Columns
- Edition – Edition from which the Greek and/or Latin text is quoted.
- Region – Historical region in Asia Minor.
- Place – Polis to which the inscription is assigned.
- Ancient Name – Ancient name of the location.
- Inscription Type – Type of inscription (predefined list).
- Object Type – Type of object (predefined list).
- Date Commentary – Additional information about dating and, if applicable, the scholar responsible for the dating.
- Epoch – Historical period assigned to the inscription.
- Text – Greek/Latin text of the inscription
- Language – Language of the text (Greek, Latin, bilingual).
- Object Description – Details about the object such as dimensions, material, or decorations
- Material – Material of the object.
- Translation – Translation of the Greek/Latin text into a modern language
- Commentary – Notes on the content of the text.
- Apparatus criticus – Information on variant readings.
- Findspot – Modern findspot of the inscription.
- Museum/Archive – Museum or archive where the inscription is currently kept.
- Bibliography – References to other editions and scholarly literature.
- Filename – Internal EDAK reference number for the inscription.
3. Full Text Search
This function searches for keywords across all available inscription fields.
- It allows searching in Greek text without diacritical marks.
- For precise results, activate only exact matches.
- Searching across line breaks is currently not possible, but planned for future updates.
4. Column Filters
In every column that is visible, you can search separately for a keyword.
- Searching without diacritical marks is not possible here.
- The search term must match exactly.
5. Resetting Filters
Use the Reset button in the top-right corner of the screen to clear all applied filters.
