PHILOSOPHy

Welcome to the Department of Philosophy, University of Hamburg

Hamburg is the second-largest city of Germany, a major cultural metropolis, and home to over 1.8 million people. It is one of Germany's loveliest places to live and work and also one of its centres for philosophy.

We are about twenty professional philosophers in Germany's fifth largest university, covering a wide range of subjects in theoretical philosophy, practical philosophy, and the history of philosophy.

About these pages

Here you will find information about us, our undergraduate and graduate programmes, the major areas of philosophical inquiry, and other news. Please be advised that some of the links leading to other pages are only available in German. You might want to consider the university's German-English Glossary.

Where to find us
The Department of Philosophy is housed right on campus in the tenth floor of the largest buliding. (It is aptly nick-named "the philosopher's tower".) From here, you have a wonderful view of the city including a great sight at the city's central lake Alster. Drop by some time and see for yourself!
